Abstract
557,685. Machine guns; cartridge-belt boxes. MARTIN, J., and MARTIN-BAKER AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd. Nov. 9, 1938, No. 32542. [Classes 9 (i) and 92 (ii)] A cartridge belt box for a machine gun is fixed alongside the gun and parallel to the gun barrel, the belt being led from the middle of the box through a channel extending along the upper part of the box. In the form shown a box 1 the internal width of which is substantially equal to the length of a cartridge has a lid 2 coupled at each end to the box by removable hinge pins la, and lateral flanges 3 on its sides to serve as handles. The box is provided with a sloping end face 11 and the lid has a pivoted spring-pressed flap 8 to bear on the cartridge belt, so that when the box is tilted, e.g. by the diving of an aircraft on which it may be mounted, the cartridges remain properly staggered and do not pile up at one end. The cartridge belt is led from the box between guide rollers 14, 15 in the lid and thence through a channel 12 in the lid, over a guide roller 18 to an outlet 17b of flattened tubular form. The guide rollers may be of tapering form to suit the cartridge and may be recessed to accommodate the cartridge rims. The box is disposed parallel to the gun barrel to economise space particularly m the case where the guns are mounted in aircraft wings. A curved extension 19, Fig. 2, as described in Specification 557,686, is adapted to be coupled with the outlet 17b so that the cartridges may be presented correctly to the gun breech.
