Abstract

557,545. Resinous materials; varnishes. FIELDER, H. March 24, 1942, No. 3863 [Class 95] A non-imflammable fire-resisting resinous material, suitable for use in the preparation of non-inflammable fire-resisting varnishes, is prepared by dissolving shellac, as well as an alkali metal carborate and/or borax, in water, and then passing gaseous ammonia and chlorine through the solution until the resinous material is precipitated. To prepare a non-inflammable, fire resisting varnish, this resinous material is dissolved in naphtha, and the solution is mixed with a gum and ferrous sulphate dissolved in a solution containing an alkali metal carbonate neutralized by vinegar. An oil, such as castor oil or linseed oil. and an alkali metal silicate may be added. Examples are given.
