Abstract
557,488. Treating artificial filament fabrics. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and McFARLANE, R. A. May 19, 1942, No. 6775. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] Bolting cloth, grit gauze, and the like is made from a thermoplastic artificial thread containing one or more continuous filaments woven in a leno weave and the threads are prevented from slipping over one another by thermally welding the warp and weft threads at their crossings, with or without the use of a swelling agent. In weaving the fabric, either all or only some of the warp threads may be crossed over one another between successive insertions of the weft thread, e.g. a full leno or half leno fabric may be obtained. Multifilament threads are given sufficient twist to confine the filaments to the parent thread. The thermoplastic thread may be of cellulose acetate or of a resin such as that obtained by co-polymerization of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate. The swelling agent may be acetone or trichlorethylene. In an example, a fabric made wholly or in part from such a thread and woven with a leno weave is subjected to a decatizing treatment for about 1 minute, or is calendered at a temperature of 150‹ F. or more. In another example, a similar fabric is padded through a solution of 90 per cent. acetone in water. The fabric is squeezed, pulled out to the desired dimensions on a pin stenter and dried at 70‹-90‹ C. Instead of aqueous acetone there may be used as softening agent a solution of acetone in methylated spirits with or without tricresyl phosphate. Specifications 449,106, 462,242, and 513,354 are referred to.
