[Class 132 (ii)] In a marking machine for applying lines of paint &c. or heated thermoplastic material to road surfaces &c. a container and closure member therefore are movable relatively in the fore- and-aft direction of the machine and are arranged so that the outlet when open is situated substantially at ground level. As shown, the container 40 holding the marking material is closed by a plate 48 and may be slid rearwardly along guides on the plate by means of a hand-lever 70, the closure plate being retained in the forward position by a hook 50 and pivot pin 52. In this position, the closure plate scrapes along the ground during a marking operation and the material passes through the open bottom of the container to mark a line. The rear edge of the closure plate 48 is rebated at 62, Fig. 6, to fit against the rear wall 43 of the container when the flow of material is cut off, and preferably is formed with a cutting edge 66. When the machine is to be moved without marking a line, the container is swung upwards about the pivot pin 52 by means of side levers 96 actuated by a pull-and-push rod 104. The container is readily detachable. A platform 118 is provided to support a blow-lamp 116, the flame of which is directed into a chamber 114 at the front of the container. A pointer 128 co-operating with marks 130 on one of the ground wheels provides distance indicating means when marking dot-anddash lines. To guard against unintentional movement of the machine whilst the container is being opened and closed, an L-shaped bar may be swung into contact with the ground and held by the operator's foot.
