Abstract

556,124. Shock-absorbers. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and DOUGLAS, P.March 17,1942, No. 3526. [Class 108 (iii)] In the hydraulic shock absorber of the sliding piston type used on road vehicles, means is provided whereby on each action stroke the piston meets relatively low resistance within a predetermined range and the full normal resistance only when that range of stroke is exceeded. In the double piston opposed construction shown in Fig. 1, in which the two main pistons a are reciprocated together by the arm e, the outer end of each piston forms a cylinder in which works a sub-piston k, the movement of which is limited by a shoulder at one end and a spring ring m at the other. A one way-valve h with a throttling orifice q ensure free return of the main piston. After the play of the sub-piston is taken up, main piston movement is resisted by throttling passages r, s with pin t while excessive resistance exerted through passage q lifts spring plate p. A spring may resist movement of the sub-piston. A plate with valves similar to the sub-piston may be arranged at the rivet end of the cylindrical recess to provide hydraulic resistance to the movement of the sub-piston. In a modification two parallel main pistons each with its sub-piston are each forced by spring into contact with a twoarm operating lever. A single main piston with subpiston may be used.
