Abstract

556,010. Pipe joints. HAYES, C. W., and MITCHELL, R. J. July 9, 1942, No. 3488. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] Sealing means for a pipe joint comprises a distensible tubular envelope of rubber &c. which is completely enclosed between the ends of the pipes to be joined, or between them and an enclosing collar or housing, so that the envelope, when distended, is in contact with substantially the whole of the surrounding parts. After being placed in position, the envelope is expanded by injection into it through a non-return valve of a liquid or semisolid substance, or a gas. The substance may be one that changes its state after injection, such as cement or a polymer derived from vinyl chloride. Fluid pressure may be supplied from the pipe system itself or from an independent source. The ring or envelope x, Fig. 1, may be accommodated in recesses in the ends of the pipes 10, 11, or a keeper-ring 12, Fig. 3, may be attached. The envelope may be surrounded by a two-part housing 14, Fig. 4, in which the non-return valve is located, the ends of the pipes 10, 11 being of wedge-form. The envelope may be cemented to the housing, and the pipe ends may be grooved or roughened. Two envelopes x, Fig. 8, may be separated by a projection 16a on the housing 16. Additional packing-rings 17, 18, Fig. 12, may be inserted after the envelope x has been positioned. The additional packing may include a wedge-ring 20, Fig. 13, of rubber &c. and a filling ring 21 of metal &c. which is retained by a spring ring 23 located in a groove.
