Abstract
555,356. Periscopes. SMEATON, J. S., SMEATON, 1. D., and SOCHACZEWSKI, S. Jan. 16, 1942, No. 15968/41. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XXI] For firing from cover, the images of the foresight and the backsight of a rifle are received on a mirror 2 and reflected directly on to a second mirror 3 wherein they are seen by the marksman. The mirror 2 is held by claws 4 on a metal plate 5 having one end turned over to embrace a tube 1, the turned-over part being clamped to the main part by a wing nut 6 engaging a screw 7. The mirror 3 is similarly mounted on the other end of the tube 1. Stops 30, 31 on the tube facilitate setting of the mirrors. The tube is pivoted at 13 on a bracket 15 clamped to or spring-held on the butt. When the mirrors are not required, the nuts 6 and 10 are slackened, the mirrors are turned to lie alongside the tube, the nuts are tightened, and the pivot-nut 17 is slackened to enable the tube to be turned into line with the rifle. A stop 32 on the bracket 15 facilitates adjustment of the tube. A butt extension 20, made of a single piece of metal integral with or, as shown, secured by screws to the butt, has a V-shaped box-structure 22 having rolled claws 24 which engage the pin 25 which supports the sling 26.
