Abstract

620,188. Small-arms. SMEATON, I. D., and SOCHACZEWSKI, S. Jan. 7, 1947, No. 496. [Class 119] A small-arm modified for use with periscopic sights for firing from cover has the usual butt replaced by one constructed of tubular members 3 and 3<SP>1</SP> and a butt plate 4, the whole being offset to one side of the weapon so as not to obstruct the periscopic sighting. An auxiliary butt 6 has a tubular member 11 spring urged into a tube 7 mounted by welded tubes 8 and 10 and a bolt 9 in a position below the rifle. This auxiliary butt, which is itself offset from the tube 11 by members 13, 14 and 15 so as to lie in the centre line of the rifle, may be stowed by turning it into a position at 180 degrees to that shown. An auxiliary trigger 39 is provided operating through a sleeve 40 sliding-on the tubular member 11, a link 41, and a sliding member 42 mounted on the trigger guard to actuate the trigger proper 38. The sighting arrangement comprises a mirror 31 which may be lowered when not in use and which reflects into another mirror 28 (shown dotted) mounted in a sheet metal housing 26 arranged to be rotated into a stowage position substantially parallel to the bore of the rifle when not in use. A small pivoted piece 52 serves as a rest for the rifle when being fired from cover and can pivot into a position so that the top of a tripod support may engage behind it.
