Abstract
555,326. Valves; pumps. HUBER, C J. Feb. 12, 1942, No. 1869. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXVI] A valve device particularly adapted for use in a pump used in blood transfusion apparatus comprises a tube of resilient compressible material and an inner member or core of the same crosssectional contour but of smaller cross-sectional area than the normal cross-sectional area of the tube together with mechanically operated means for compressing a portion of the wall of the tube into contact with the periphery of the inner member. The Figures show the valve used as inlet and outlet valves of a pump. The pump comprises a pair of elastic tubes 21, 22 secured at the ends to nipples 23 screwed into the end walls 13 of an outer casing and carrying cross pins 33a supporting inner core members 32, 33. Each tube is surrounded by three pairs of blocks slidably arranged between the base plate 11 and a removable cover plate 14. The outer blocks are adjustably held in place by set screws 37 while the inner blocks have hardened bearing members adapted to be engaged by a series of cams 48, 49, 50 on a power driven shaft arranged between the tubes. The inner faces of the blocks have curved recesses with a radius slightly less than the normal radius of the tube and subtending an angle of 45 degrees. These blocks also have recesses with inclined surfaces adapted to cooperate with similar surfaces on intermediate members 42 having curved faces also subtending an angle of approximately 45 degrees. The cams 48, 50 are shaped so as to hold the valves closed during one half of a revolution and to permit the valves to be opened fully for approximately one quarter of a revolution. The cams 49 are so shaped that they have no compressing effect through 180 degrees of revolution but gradually compress the tubes during 135 degrees followed by a somewhat abrupt release during the remaining 45 degrees. In a modification a single inner member extends from end to end of the tubes. The tubes may extend to the outside of the casing in place of being secured to nipples 23.
