Abstract

555,324. Filters. GLENFIELD & KENNEDY, Ltd., and BOUCHER, P. L. Feb. 11, 1942, No. 1799. [Class 46] [Also in Group XXIX] A self-cleaning pressure strainer for water comprises a parallel set of standard pipes or cells a accommodating cloth-covered straining baskets b and poweroperated inlet valves c<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>2</SP>, c<SP>3</SP> and wash valves c<SP>4</SP>, c<SP>5</SP>, c<SP>6</SP> controlled by means operated in sequence by a cam shaft, or shafts e, e<SP>1</SP>, driven by a motor m, which is started and stopped by a differential pressure unit f connected by pipes g, h across the strainer, so that each cell in turn is isolated from the unstrained water and backwashed with part of the strained water from the other cells. The baskets b may be parallelsided and the pipes a tapered. As shown, hydraulically-operated sluice valves c<SP>1</SP> ... c<SP>6</SP> are controlled by pilot valves d<SP>1</SP> ... d<SP>6</SP> operated by the cam-shaft e for opening, and the cam-shaft e<SP>1</SP> for closing, the valves. The shafts e, e<SP>1</SP> are connected through reduction gearing n with a motor in controlled by a switch p operated by the diaphragm q of the unit f. The diaphragm load is balanced as by an adjustable spring r. A switch t in parallel with the switch p may be fitted to one of the cam-shafts so that both switches must be open before the motor stops. Sluice valves k<SP>1</SP>, k<SP>2</SP>, k<SP>3</SP> may be provided at the outlets for cutting out any cell for dismantling and a by-pass valve l may be provided. Alternatively, the cams may operate switches for starting, stopping and reversing valve-operating motors.
