[Class 46] [See also Group XXIX] A portable filter or water softener of the base-exchange type is provided with a valve which enables water from the main supply to pass directly to the outlet of the apparatus when only unfiltered or hard water is required or to be mixed in any proportion with water which has passed through the apparatus. In one position of the valve the water is caused to pass entirely through the apparatus but in no position is the outlet closed. The filter or softener is thus never subjected to the full pressure of the water in the main. Fig. 2 shows a portable water softener in which the valve 21 is in a position to cause all the water from the main supply 20 to enter the inlet pipe 11 of the softener, the softened water passing through the pipe 12 to the outlet 18. Fig. 4 shows the position of the valve in which no water passes through the softener, the main supply being diverted entirely into the outlet 18. In an intermediate position of the valve a part of the main supply passes directly to the outlet 18 and a part enters the softener and is discharged through the pipe 12 and mixes with the unsoftened water in the outlet 18.
