Abstract

801,011. Filtering liquids ; purifying water; treating waste liquids. SUTCLIFFE, SPEAKMAN & CO. Ltd., and EDWARDS, F. E. [Representative of Edwards, W. A.]. Dec. 5, 1955 [Sept. 3, 1954]. No. 25700/54. Classes 46 and 111. [Also in Group XXIX]. During normal operation of an apparatus comprising a filter 4, Fig. 1, (containing, e.g. sand and gravel) separated by a gauze screen 2 from a dechlorinator 7 (containing, e.g. activated carbon), in a cylindrical casing 1, the liquid to be treated (e.g. chlorinated water or a trade effluent) is supplied at 10 through a multiport valve 11 to the two parts downwards in series, and discharged through the same valve at 15. When the valve handle 16 is at the " west " position, port 18 in the valve plug connects 10 with 15, the casing being thus by-passed. When the handle 16 is in the " north-west " position the ends of pipes 10, 12, 14 and 15 are all obturated, the apparatus being thus shut down. The " north " position is for normal operation (Fig. 1). In the " northeast " position liquid entering at 10 passes along a port 19, Figs. 2 and 3, located in the valve plug in a plane behind ports 17, 18, and passes down the pipe 14 to the base of the dechlorinating part 7. The liquid rises through the easing 1, backwashing the dechlorinator and filter in that order and passing, some along pipes 21 and 22, and the remainder along pipe 12, through a further port 20, Figs. 2 and 4, in the valve plug, and into pipe 22. The filter alone may be backwashed by closing a valve 25 in pipe 14 and opening a valve 24 leading to a perforated pipe 23. The pipe lines of the apparatus may be sterilised by passage into them of filtered chlorinated liquid through pipe 23 and valve 24. Steam may be admitted through a valve 26, Fig. 1, to reactivate the carbon, valves 11, 21a, 24 and 25 being closed during this operation. A spring-loaded relief valve 27 is provided.
