Abstract

554,707. Cellulose-derivative compositions. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. April 10, 1942, No. 4726. Convention date, April 10, 1941. Drawings to Specification. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group XL] In producing a starting electrode, particularly for mercury pool devices, by coating a conductor, such as tungsten or molybdenum, with a plurality of layers of high resistance material, the conductor is first dipped in a mixture of equal parts of 320 mesh (320 holes per linear mesh) boron carbide and 500 mesh silicon carbide with a few per cent. of silicon, suspended in nitro-cellulose dissolved in amyl acetate or diethyl carbonate, and withdrawn in 5-45, preferably 15, seconds. After drying in air, or firing in hydrogen for ten minutes at 1100‹ C. the second layer is formed by dipping in a similar mixture with three parts siliconcarbide to one of boron carbide, and withdrawing in 15-30 seconds. A larger number of layers may be applied with gradually increasing proportions of silicon carbide. Boron nitride may be included in the compositions.
