Abstract

554,461. Boots &c. MATTHEWS, W. C. Oct. 6, 1942, No. 13977. [Class 17 (ii)] A heel guard comprises a tongue 1 of flexible material such as soft leather, roughened or corrugated on its front surface 2 to prevent movement relatively to the heel of the wearer, but smooth on its rear surface 3 so that it can slide relatively to the heel of the shoe. The upper part of the guard is turned back to form a tab 6 which is treated with adhesive for attachment to the back of the shoe. The fold line 5 may be weakened. Alternatively, the upper part may be provided with a row of perforations for atachment by sewing, or with split rings to engage holes punched in the shoe upper, or by means of a pin. The lower part of the guard is triangular or rounded in shape, and may extend under the heel of the wearer. In another construction, the guard comprises a sheet of flexible compressed fibre corrugated on one face and backed with smooth leather, canvas &c.
