Abstract

554,312. Separating corroded metal parts. DESHAW, Z. Dec. 26, 1941, No. 16683. [Class 91] Metal parts, particularly iron or steel machine parts, cemented together by rust or incrustation are separated or the separation is facilitated by immersing them in a petroleum distillate or like hydrocarbon in a closed vessel and raising the contents to a temperature which produces a considerable vapour pressure in the vessel, the liquid being forced thereby into the gaps or crevices between the parts to be separated. Alternatively, the parts may be heated in an atmosphere of the compressed vapour of the distillate or like hydrocarbon. Lower petroleum fractions having high penetrative powers are preferred and kerosene, particularly of burning oil quality, is specified. When used as liquid, a temperature of 60-70‹C. is suitable. The process may be effected in a pressure vessel or autoclave, and may be employed when one or more of the surfaces to be separated are of metals other than iron or steel such as copper and brass.
