Abstract
A process of separation of solids by the sink-and-float method, in which the separating medium comprises a suspension of a finely ground substance in a non-aqueous liquid which has no deleterious effect on the solids being separated. As liquid phase petroleum products such as fuel oil, diesel oil, gas oil or paraffin, coal tar products, e.g., creosote oil, and vegetable oils, alcohol or hydrogenated hydrocarbons, may be used in which may be suspended as solid phase galena, ferro silicon, barytes, pyrites or copper matte. It is stated that suspensions having a specific gravity of 2.8 for the separation of light alloy scrap may be obtained by the use of galena which has previously been heated to 75 DEG C. in paraffin or kept at room temperature in suspension in the liquid phase for 48 hours. The articles may be washed in the liquid phase to remove grease and oil, and dry adherent solid phase after separating may similarly be removed. Specification 547,102 is referred to.
