Abstract

Yeast is produced by maintaining a yeast in an aqueous nutrient medium in the presence of a paraffinic feedstock of petroleum origin and a free oxygen containing gas, e.g. air, under favourable yeast growth conditions, the average molecular weight of the feedstock corresponding to at least 10 carbon atoms per molecule. The yeast produced is separated as a paste by centrifugation and is dried. Before centrifuging a surface-active agent may be added to assist in the removal of residual hydrocarbons attached to the yeast, as described for example, in Specification 914,567. The paraffinic feedstock may be a straight run fraction of petroleum, e.g. kerosenes, gas oils, middle fractions, a wax, e.g. a slack wax, obtained by dewaxing a lubricating oil fraction, or a paraffin separated by a molecular sieve frozen, and the nutrient medium, which preferably contains small amounts, e.g. 25 p.p.m. of group B vitamins, yeast extract, anti-foaming agent and other hydrocarbons, e.g. naphthenes, aromatics, is suitably maintained at a pH in the range 3.5 to 4.5 by the stepwise or continuous addition of alkaline materials, e.g. sodium hydroxide, and is kept at a temperature between 25 DEG and 35 DEG C. and subjected to vortex aeration and stirred. The process is applicable to the yeast families Cryptococcaceae and sub-families Cryptococcoidae and Saccharnyceloidae, the genera Torulopsis and Candida of the former sub-family being particularly suitable. Preferred strains are Candida Lipolytica and Candida Tropicalis. The adaptation of the former strain to assimulate carbon from the feedstocks is described.
