Abstract

554,158. Filtering and cleaning air. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., and CUPERY, M. E. Sept. 19, 1941, No. 12028. [Class 8 (ii)] [Also in Group IV] A viscous dust-catching material applied to filters or impact &c. air cleaners is constituted by glyceryl ammonium sulphate or other saltester of a polybasic inorganic oxyacid and a polyhydroxy aliphatic compound, which forms a non-crystallizing liquid either alone or in presence of plasticizer or solvent. Glyceryl ammonium sulphate may be prepared by interaction of equal amounts of glycerol and sulphonic acid, and a wetting agent containing a mixed sulphate of sodium and of coconut oil alcohols and a fungicide such as phenyl mercuric oxide added, and the mixture reheated. The sulphuric acid may be replaced by boric or phosphoric ; the aliphatic compound may be a hydroxy acid, glycol, a higher alcohol or sugar. Viscosity may be increased by adding glue, methyl cellulose, starch acetate, gum Karaya, polyvinyl alcohol &c. The composition may be deposited on filters comprising fibrous materials, or wood flour &c. deposited on wire screens, or corrugated paper or successive layers of fabric ; the filter structure may be bound together by adhesive such as latex.
