Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain inexpensively a protein water-base adhesive with remarkably decreased odor by compounding a protein water-base adhesive with a specified (acidic) sulfite and/or a vegetable oil. CONSTITUTION:A protein water-base adhesive [e.g. a compd. of a glue or a gelatin with a resin emulsion (e.g. PVA, epoxy resin or acryl resin emulsion etc.,)] is compounded with NaXSO3 (wherein X is H or Na) and/or a vegetable oil (e.g. a jasmin oil, a rose oil, a peppermint oil, a camphor oil, a lemon oil or a composite oil thereof etc.) (the amt. of loading is usually 20-3,000ppm based on the solid content in the protein water-base adhesive compsn.). The odor thereof can be remarkably decreased thereby.

Protein-based water-based adhesives such as glue, gelatin, and casein have long been used industrially as adhesives for wood, paper, cloth, and the like. It is also known to be used in combination with various resins in order to improve the adhesion of the adhesive, such as combinations with polyvinyl alcohol etc. (Japanese Patent Application Laid-open No. 49-122545), combinations with epoxy resins ( Japanese Patent Publication No. 50-10833

1. Additives such as a plasticizer, an antifoaming agent, and a preservative can be added to the protein-based aqueous adhesive composition of the present invention, if necessary. Among these, plasticizers include sugars such as glycerin, ethylene glycol, toluenesulfonamide, and sucrose. These are effective in preventing warping of the bonded area, so they are used in combination when warping of the bonded area is a problem. It is preferable to do so.
