Abstract

553,729. Aircraft gun mountings. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., (Soc. d'Applications des Machines Motrices.). May 3, 1940, No. 15130/39. [Class 92 (i)] Air pressure forces acting on aircraft guns projecting from gun turrets into the air stream are counterbalanced during training or elevation by a cam, eccentric, or crank 1 rotating synchronously with the gun and acting on a piston 5 subject to spring or pneumatic pressure. In the form shown, the eccentric 1 is driven at the same speed as the gun turret by reduction gearing 13 which is connected with the power driven pinion 12 that trains the turret by engaging, a fixed rack 11. The eccentric 1 actuates through roller 3 a piston 5 in a cylinder 6 fast with the turret. Air under pressure is supplied to the cylinder through a pipe 9 and non-return valve 10 by way of an annular chamber 8 and passages 7. In a modification, the cylinder is pivotally mounted and the piston rod is connected to a crank driven by reduction gearing of the epicyclic type. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 204,070, [Class 92 (i)], 367,367, 367,845 and 424,002.
