[Class 68 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In a tool-carrying chain for a coal cutter or like apparatus composed of a series of similar links each comprising a fork at one end and an apertured projection at the other end adapted to enter the fork of the next link, the fork is constituted by side plates separated throughout their depth and tool-bosses are welded to the side plate portions of some or all the links. As shown, each link 11 comprises two side members 13 built from channel sections or formed as castings or forgings with dirtextrusion openings 22, and provided with an eye 15 at one end and an apertured elliptical, circular or other boss 17 at the other end, and with guide flanges 20, 21, on their upper and lower edges; the members 13 are placed together, a liner 19 is placed in the adjoining bosses 17, and a bushing 39 is inserted in the liner. The bosses 17 are then placed between the eyes 15 of the adjacent link, keys 24 on one or both ends of the bushing 39 engaging longitudinal or transverse slots 23 in said eyes to prevent relative rotation, and rivets 12 are inserted through the bushings and eyes; the rivets may be shouldered at one end to receive conical washers 25, Fig. 3. Tool-bosses 27, cast, forged or cut from a bar, and circular or egg-shaped, are placed at the desired angle against the edges 26 of the members 13 of some or all the links and welded thereto, or welded to one member and tacked to the other. Lateral adjustment of the width of the chain may be effected by inserting a washer 32, Fig. 3, between the bosses 17.
