A chain saw has right- and left-hand cutter links c and c' with positive top rake c' and positive side rake c' on their cutting teeth c' and c<SP>3</SP> and each cutter link is preceded by a pair of outer links a, a', the link a' preceding the corresponding sidecutting tooth on its cutting side and having a projection b that forms a combined vertical and lateral depth gauge for that cutting tooth. The lateral depth limitation may be reduced by cranking the projection b sideways as shown at f. A central link d having a raker tooth d<SP>1</SP> positioned 0.020 inches below the teeth c', c<SP>3</SP> is provided in each set of links and the sets of links may be connected by a pair of plain outer links a and a plain central link.
