The cutter links 12 of a chain saw have a cutting tooth 15 substantially rectangular in plan and cross-section, of a width greater than the overall width of the cutter and connecting links and of a thickness greater than the cutter link thickness. The tooth may be at either end of the link and may be integral with it or attached to it by brazing, in which latter case the tooth is grooved at 18 to fit over the link and may back against a projection 31. The cutting edge 17 may be normal or oblique to the saw axis, with straight or concave rake 16, and clearance is provided by forming the top surface of the tooth to slope downwardly or by tilting the head on its link and also by tapering the sides from front to rear. Single or double connecting links 32 or 10, 11, respectively, may be used. A central depth gauge 30 or 19 may be provided at the opposite end of a cutter link 12 from the cutter tooth or at any point along a central connecting link 12 and additional left- and right-hand gauges 20, 21 may be provided at either end of the double links 10 and 11, these depth gauges being employed in any desired combination or sequence. The cutting edges may be formed on inserts of high-speed steel or tungsten carbide. Sprocket-engaging extensions 22 may be provided on all links, to ride in a groove 23 of a guide bar 24, or only on outer links 10 and 11, to straddle a reduced edge on the guide bar.
