The cutter links 74 of a chain saw have a solid head 85 of which the front face 108 is raked forwardly and inwardly and the top and outer side faces 103, 150 are raked rearwardly and inwardly and the links follow each other in immediate succession and have sloping or vertical surfaces 119 at their front and rear ends which, on the straight run of the chain, abut so that the links are prevented from cocking outwardly under the cutting load. Alternate cutting links are of opposite hand and may be connected together by a single side link or by pairs of side links. The cutting head preferably lies behind the forward connecting rivet for that link and may be at the rear end of the link.
