Abstract
405,088. Excavators. KEARNEY, A. R., 136, Kenley Road, Merton Park, FARROW, H., and HOWKINS, F., Bank Buildings, Russell Parade, Golders Green Road, both in London. Nov. 24, 1932, No. 33276. [Class 68 (i).] An endless-chain excavator with side shields enclosing the idle run of cutters or buckets has the cutters &c. so formed or arranged that the active run excavates a trench wider than the distance between the outer faces of the shields while the cutters &c. in the idle run recede from the trench sides so as to pass between the shields. In Fig. 8, extreme cutters 9, 10, are provided on buckets 11, 12, so that one set of buckets, preferably alternate buckets, cuts further over to one side than the other set, the latter set cutting further to the other side ; on reaching the idle run, slack in the chain permits the buckets to move inwards to pass between the shields. The teeth 9, 10, may be placed on the chain. In Fig. 10, expanding cutters 13 pivot about pins 14 on members 15 pivoted on pins 20 on the chain 16, a tail piece 18 limiting the expansion and a cut-away part 19 permitting rocking on passing round the sprockets. Similar teeth may be arranged on the buckets. In Fig. 11, the staggered lateral teeth 23, 24, are carried by cutter bars 21 between the buckets, while in Fig. 12, a single chain 27 carries cutter-scoops 25 on pins 26, the scoops having limited play allowing them to swing laterally. Specifications 405,045 and 405,087 are referred to.
