Abstract
405,045. Excavators. KEARNEY, A. R., 136, Kenley Road, Merton Park, FARROW, H., and HOWKINS, F., Bank Buildings, Russell Parade, Golders Green Road, both in London. Aug. 8, 1932, No. 22203. [Class 68 (i).] An excavating-machine of the endless-chain type has shielding means travelling with the machine to support the sides of the trench and provide continuously a shielded clearance, for receipt of piles, behind the cutters as the machine advances. In Fig. 1, a bucket chain excavator, with its boom 6 carried by a pivot 7 movable in an arc about an axis 8, the boom also rocking about a roller 9 movable on an incline 10, is provided at each side of the boom with a triangular shield 13 extending forward to near the working buckets 1 and with vertical rear edges ; the shields are braced by tie rods connected to the boom carriage &c., and to allow for changing incline of the boom, the rear part of the shield may be adjustably pivoted. A vertical partition 18 may connect the shields and form a guide for insertion of sheet piles 15, Fig. 5, or an inclined partition may be provided, down which the piles slide as the machine advances. The shields may extend forwardly and have recesses 22, Fig. 5, receiving the idle side of the bucket chain. The machine may cut a narrow trench receiving piles supporting one side of a main trench or may be adjustably duplicated as at 24, 25, Fig. 6, to form two side trenches, the main trench being cut later ; alternatively, the machine may cut the main trench, opposite piles being strutted after insertion. Yielding pile guiding means may be provided and closure means between the rear edges of the shields, which may converge as at 16, Fig. 5, and the piles. The bucket chain may be a single chain carrying scoops which may be pivoted for lateral movement to cut a trench greater in width as in Specification 405,088.
