Abstract

405,087. Excavators. KEARNEY, A. R., 136, Kenley Road, Merton Park, FARROW; H., and HOWKINS, F., Bank Buildings, Russell Parade, Golders Green Road, both in London. Nov. 24, 1932, No. 33275. [Class 68 (i).] An excavating machine, such as a bucket chain machine, for use in the installation of piling to support the excavated trench, has side shields 13, 14 supporting the trench walls and spaced guide means 15 for the entering pile or section thereof which leave part of the pile &c. exposed for cross strutting, the shields forming at the rear of the machine a clearance within which one or more men may be supported to travel with the machine and fix the struts. The inclined forward edge of the shield is placed about in the axis of the bucket chain boom 6 and the shield pivots, or has a pivoted sector as in Specification 405,045 for adjustment of the rear edge to the vertical. Platforms 16, 17, are provided for the workmen and materials. The shields, or separate shields 19, may enclose the idle run of the bucket chain which is then preferably as described in Specification 405,088 to cut wider than its width. An inclined wall 22 may isolate the clearance from the bucket chain and a guard 23 may be provided for protection against falling material. The guides 15 may be within the shielded clearance so that piles on insertion are shielded from the trench wall. The piles may have attached members 25, Fig. 7, with slots receiving hooked ends 27 of the struts, and bars may project from the shields, or a trailing frame be provided, to hold the pile structure against swaying. The boom 6 may support two or more bucket chains adjustable to vary the width of the trench and the idle run or runs of a bucket chain may pass within external recesses in the shields.
