553,227. Converting. STEVENS, A. H. (Electronic Laboratories, Inc.). May 20, 1942, No. 6874. [Class 38 (ii)] In a system for converting D.C. from a source 19, 20 into A.C. in a load circuit 18 by means of a self-interrupter 21 with opposed contacts 22, 23 through which the source 19, 20 is alternately connected to the two halves of a centrallytapped primary of a transformer 10, the secondary of which supplies the load current, a capacitor 28 is connected across the contacts 22, 23 and the transformer core has an air gap 53, the arrangement being such as to prevent sparking at the contacts 22, 23. The capacitance 28 is charged one way when the contact 21 engages the contact 22 and the opposite way when the contact 23 is engaged. The condition for no sparking at 22, 23 is that the capacitance circuit should have such a period of oscillation that the capacitor changes from maximum charge one way to maximum charge the other way while the contact 21 is moving from one contact to the other. This is achieved by suitable choice of values of inductance and capacity for the circuit. The air gap in the transformer core ensures that the magnetizing current varies substantially linearly with respect to the voltage.
