553,190. Abietic acid derivatives. HOFFMANN-LA-ROCHE & CO. AKT.-GES., F. Jan. 22, 1942, Nos. 926 and 927. Convention dates, March 26, 1941, and April 3, 1941. [Class 2 (iii)] Derivatives of abietic acid having therapeutic properties are made by treating one molecule of halogen-trihydroxy - abietic acid with 1¢ molecules of alkali, or tetrahydroxy-abietic acid with half the quantity of alkali required for neutralisation, or 2 molecules of tetrahydroxyabietic acid alkali salt with one molecule of acid. A complex compound is obtained containing one free carboxylic acid group and one alkali carboxylate group. Bromo-trihydroxyabietic acid, which is prepared in the same way as chloro-trihydroxy abietic acid but using HBe instead of HCl, may be used as starting material. Both the sodium and potassium compounds are prepared using the corresponding alcoholic alkali hydroxide.
