Abstract

3-hydroxy-N-methyl morphinane or a salt thereof is obtained by treating 1-(p-hydroxybenzyl) - 2 - methyl - 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8 - octahydroisoquinoline with phosphoric acid or hydrobromic acid as cyclizing agent. 1-(p-Hydroxybenzyl) - 2 - methyl - 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8 - octahydroisoquinoline is obtained from the corresponding 1-benzyl compound by nitration followed by hydrogenation to the 1-(p-amino-benzyl)- compound which on diazotization and hydrolysis gives the 1 - (p - hydroxy - benzyl compound.)
