Abstract
553,084. R÷ntgen ray tubes. PHILIPS LAMPS' Ltd. (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken.) Feb. 16, 1942, No. 2065. [Class 39 (i)] To cool the anode 7 of an X-ray tube it is mounted within a china cylinder 5, contact between the anode and cylinder being effected by corrugated sheet metal 6. The cylinder 5 may form the tube envelope or be enclosed in a metal case 1, corrugated sheet metal 4 being interposed between the case 1 and cylinder 5. The target 12 is carried by a copper block 8 on which is shrunk the anode 7, a return flange 19 collecting secondaries. The anode lead 9 passes through a metal disc 10 sealed to the glass end 2 ; the weight of the anode is borne by the wall of the casing 1. A thin glass window 15 is provided for the rays in the case 1 and corresponding apertures or thin rings are formed in the sheet metal and cylinder 5.. The ends 16 of the case are thinned for sealing to sponge glass ends 2. Gaseous or liquid cooling may be provided for the casing, which may have ribs. The inside of the cylinder 5 may be provided with a thin conductive layer to reduce charging. When the china cylinder acts as the tube envelope it may have an exterior conductive coating ; the leads to the cathode pass through leads 33, Fig. 3, in a metal plate sealed to a glass end closure. Discs may be used at the ends of glass of cellular structure as described in Specification 551,115, [Group XXXVI]. The cathode 36 is supported from the china wall casing by a disc 37, which has a bent-over edge 38 made resilient by slits 39. The current supply cables may be supported by the insulator. The tube as a whole can be enclosed in oil in a metal jacket.
