[Class 130] In a cut-off mechanism for continuous-rod machines, to ensure that the cut end of a cigarette lies in a plane at right angles to the axis of the cigarette, the bearing 22 for the spindle 23 of the rotary cutter 23a is angularly adjustable about a pivot 26 with respect to a disc or like support 17, in addition to the adjustability of the disc 17 about vertical and horizontal shafts 13, 6 at right angles to the cigarette rod. The pivot 26 is horizontal when the cutter is vertically below the shaft 16 of the disc 17. As shown, the cutter 23a is clamped by plates to the spindle 23, which carries a conical friction wheel 25a driven by contact with a stationary cone wheel 28 adjustably mounted on brackets 28a. The cutter co-operates with a ledger plate 2 of the form described in Specification 263,409, [Class 130], the shaft 3 of the ledger plate being driven through gears 4, 5 from a shaft 6. The shaft 16 of the disc 17 is driven from the shaft 6 through bevel gearing 11, 12, 14a, 15. It is supported at one end in a ball bearing 29 in the cone wheel 28 and is carried by a housing 18 supported by the spigot 14b of a housing 14 to allow adjustment about the shaft 13 of the bevel gears 12, 14a. The housing 14 is similarly adjustable about a spigot on a ball-bearing housing for the shaft 6 and the housings 14, 18 are secured in adjusted position by bolts a, b. To take up wear of the cutter 23a, its bearing 22 is connected by the pivot 26 to a bracket 19 adjustable in guides on the face of the disc 17.
