Abstract

552,709. Manometers. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd., and JOLLIE, A. Aug. 29, 1941, No. 11071. [Class 106 (ii)] The invention relates to manometers and is directed towards measuring very small pressure variations in gases. A bell 1 of elongated rectangular shape is pivoted on knife-edge bearing 2, and the walls dip into a sealing liquid 5 in a trough 6 so as to enclose a space into which the gas whose pressure is to be measured is introduced by pipe 8. Movement of the bell is transmitted through link 10 and lever 11 pivoted on knife edge 17 to a -magnifying pointer .23. The pointer may be arranged to carry a pen movable over a clock-driven recording sheet. Alternatively the indicating means may comprise a mirror with lamp and scale. The weight off the bell is approximately balanced by the buoyancy of the sealing liquid, weight 13 and adjustable spring 14, which is so long that its tension is not materially affected by the small movements of the bell, and which serves to adjust the zero. Adjustable weights 16, 18 mounted respectively verticaiy below and above pivot 17 are provided for varying the counterbalancing torque and hence the sensitivity of the apparatus. For comparing the pressures of two gases, the apparatus is enclosed as shown, and the second gas is introduced by pipe 22.
