Abstract
552,706. Ketones. SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO. July 14, 1941, No. 8903. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group VI] Unsaturated aliphatic ketones or cyclicketones containing at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule, which are used in insecticidal preparations are obtained by condensing unsubstituted ketones of low molecular weight with each other. Ketones such as diethylketone, propyl-isopropylketone, methylvinylketone and cyclic ketones such as cyclohexanone may be condensed by treatment in liquid or vapour phase with a catalyst such as sulphuric and phosphoric acids, potassium or sodium hydroxide, aluminium chloride, boron fluoride, acetic anhydride, zinc alkyls, sodium pyrosulphate, activated alumina, sodium silicate, borax or Portland cement. The reaction may be carried out at super-atmospheric pressure and at 50‹ to 150‹ C. The product consists mainly of a mixture of ketones and ketols which can be dehydrated to ketones by heating with sodium acid tartrate or iodine. Some of the ketones produced are cyclic, e.g. that obtained by condensation of mesityl oxide.
