[Class 100 (ii)] In a machine for printing on cans, shells, &c. the cans are passed down a chute 3 to an intermittently rotated star wheel 10 which is rotated in timed relation with ink-applying rollers 31 yieldingly mounted in brackets 28 carried by chains 27, Fig. 3, passing over sprockets on shafts 36, 36a driven by belt gearing from a shaft 13a driven by a motor 47, which also drives belts 11 passing around adjustably mounted pulleys. The belts 11 engage the edges of the cans and roll them over rails 2 which guide the cans across the adjustably mounted printing-surface 23 which is inked by the rollers 31. The belts 11 pass over pulleys 12 which can be adjusted laterally for dealing with cans of different lengths, and the pulley supports can be adadjusted vertically by screw mechanism for cans of different diameters. The chains 27 run upon chain guides 39 while passing over the die, and the rollers 31 pass over an inking-pad 40 mounted in an adjustable tray 48, and the pad may be supplied with ink from a reservoir by means of a wick. The shoots 3, 4 are supported at an adjustable angle by means of struts 5 with adjustable connections 6 with the supporting frame 1, and the belt drive between the shafts 13a, 36a passes over an adjustable pulley 62a to allow for adjustments of the belts 11. Star wheels 10 with pockets of different sizes may be used, or the pockets of one wheel may be adjustable.
