Abstract

1,110,473. Capping bottles etc.; endless conveyers. OWENS ILLINOIS Inc. 1 April, 1966, No. 14500/66. Headings B8A and B8T. Bottles &c. 10 moved from left to right along a conveyer 11 have screw-threaded necks and each picks up a flanged cap (9), Fig. 1 (not shown), from a feed (30), one side of the top of each cap being engaged by a belt 42, Fig. 2, driven in the direction of feed of the bottles &o. at a faster speed than the rate of advance of the bottles, and the other side of the top of each cap being engaged by a belt 43 which is not driven but is moved slowly by the advance of the bottles; thus the belts 42, 43 rotate the caps (9) on the bottles &c. 10 and screw them into place. The belt 42 is driven by a pulley 44 keyed upon a shaft 46 and powered through gears, sprockets &c. 50-55, while the belt 43 runs on pulley 45 freely journalled upon the shaft 46. The belts 42, 43 are guided by idle and spring-biased jockey pulleys (60), (63), Fig. 1 (not shown), and by a backing plate (84) which holds them against the tops of the bottle caps (9). The backing plate (84) &c. is adjustable for height relative to the conveyer (11) in brackets (70) to allow the passage of different size bottles &c. through the machine, and is biased by an adjustably compressed spring (76), Fig. 3 (not shown), towards the bottles. Endless conveyers.-The bottles &c. 10, Fig. 2, are gripped at each side by rubber pads 13 on two pairs of endless chains 12, the chains of each pair being mounted one above the other and running over pairs of drive sprockets (14), Fig. 1 (not shown). The drive sprockets (14) are fast upon shafts (15) powered through gear trains in cases (17) from a common input shaft (16). The gear cases (17) are slidable towards and away from each other along a support rod (19) and along a splined portion of the input shaft (16), to vary the spacing between the conveyer chains 12, Fig. 2, so that they may accept different sized bottles &c. Adjustment of the spacing of the conveyer chains 12 is effected by rotation of a shaft 23 having two oppositelythreaded portions engaged by brackets on the gear cases 17. Bars 22 are carried by the gear cases 17 and mount guides (24), Fig. 3 (not shown), which hold the conveyer chains (12) and their rubber pads (13) against the bottles &c. (10).
