Abstract

552,362. Vehicle wheels. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-(Kelsey-Hayes Wheel Co.) Oct. 11, 1940, No. 15177. [Class 144 (ii)] Relates to rims of the kind having an endless rim-base 1 with an integral flange 4, and a detachable endless side flange or ring 2, which is sprung into position on the rim. The base 1 has a gutter 3 the outer wall 5 of which is formed with two notches 15, 17, which may both be through-notches or, as shown, the notch 17 may be a triangular throughnotch and the notch 15 a pocket formed in the wall 5. The ring 2 has a single rectangular notch 16 (shown in chain lines in Fig. 4) slightly longer than the part 6 of the wall 5 upstanding between the notches 15, 17. Adjacent the notch 17 the wall 5 is chamfered at 18. To assemble the rim, the notch 16 of the ring is interlocked at a slight angle, as shown in chain lines in Fig. 4, with the wall-part 6 of the rim-base, so that peripheral relative movement is prevented, and then, working in the direction of the arrow x, the ring is gradually eased over the wall 5 and seated upon the annular faces 9, 12<SP>1</SP> of the wall. Slight relative peripheral motion is then effected so as to mask the through-notches and prevent entry of water or dirt in to the gutter 3.
