Abstract

552,301. Valve relay circuits. CINEMATELEVISION, Ltd., and NUTTALL, T. C. Sept. 29, 1941, No. 12608. [Class 40 (v)] A circuit comprises two valves with a common cathode resistance and an impedance in the anode circuit of one valve to which the signal is fed and with a coupling to the grid of the other valve from the anode of the first valve. Change in current in the anode circuit of either valve may be utilized and the coupling impedances have a value such that the coupling is greater than the minimum value required to produce instability so that the current changes over abruptly from one valve to the other. The Figure shows a pair of valves 1, 2 coupled by resistances 5, 6, 7 and having a common cathode resistance 4. In this manner a closed regenerative path is provided which will produce instability if the transmission round the path exceeds unity and cause one valve to be cut off and the other to pass full current in both directions. To reduce the overlap between the two critical values at which the valves change over without restricting the magnitude of the current change, the intervalve coupling may be given a rising frequency characteristic as by the provision of condenser 8. One of the coupling impedances may be variable to control the extent of the overlap. The signal may be derived from a photo-cell so that operation is effected by light values or the arrangement may be used as a discriminating circuit in a counting system. An electro-magnetic relay may be operated on receipt of a definite value of signal or the arrangement may be used for wave shaping.
