Abstract
540,754. Valve relay circuits. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. May 27, 1940, No. 9294. Convention date, May 27, 1939. [Class 40 (v)] A valve relay circuit comprises a thermionic valve having a control grid, screen grid and a suppressor grid in combination with an output circuit and circuits connected to the several grids, the control grid circuit being adapted to receive impulses, there being provided means responsive to the relation between the suppressor grid voltage and the screen grid current for causing current to be passed selectively through the output circuit or the screen grid circuit. In Fig. 1 input terminals 10 are coupled by a resistance 13 and capacity 12 to the control grid of a pentode 11 the output circuit of which includes the winding of a relay 14. A power source 19 is bridged by a resistance 20 having an earthed centre tap connected to the cathode through resistance 15 and capacity 16, a positive terminal 23 which is connected to the plate through relay winding 14 and to the screen grid through resistance 17, and a negative terminal 24 which is connected through resistance 18 to the suppressor grid. A resistance 25, 26 is connected between the screen and suppressor grid leads the part 25 being bridged by a capacity 27. Due to this coupling between the screen and suppressor grids there are two stable conditions in which either the plate current or the screen grid current is large the other being small. The changeover from one to the other can be effected by successive short negative impulses applied to input terminals 10. This momentarily interrupts the plate and screen grid currents and allows condenser 27 to effect the change. The arrangement is also described for controlling the operation of an amplifier, and for operating a relay having two windings, the additional winding being connected in the screen grid circuit. A modification is described in which the value of the plate current is large or small depending on whether a long or a short negative impulse is applied to the control grid.
