[Classes 99 (ii) and 102 (i)] A mobile double-acting reciprocating hand pump suitable for fire-fighting or horticultural purposes comprises a cylinder 27 reciprocating over a fixed piston 28 which has valve means for putting the increasing and decreasing cylinder spaces on the two sides of the piston respectively into communication with inlet and discharge conduits 10, 14. The latter are connected respectively to suction and pressure chambers 44, 43 in the piston. The valve means comprises non-rotatable annular plate valves 49, 55 held in position above and below the piston by springs 50, 56, and plate valves 52, 54 held in position within the pressure chamber 43 by a spring 53. The piston is packed with wound cord 39, and the cylinder has packing glands 29 at its ends. When,the cylinder moves down, water from the inlet pipe 10 passes through the suction chamber 44, radial passages 45, and outer ports 57 at the bottom of the piston, around the valve 55, and through the ports 58 into the lower end of the cylinder. At the same time water passes from the upper end of the cylinder through ports 51, 48 in the valve 49 and upper end of the piston, and through the pressure chamber 43 to the discharge conduit 14. When the cylinder moves up, water from the inlet pipe 10 passes through the suction chamber 44, radial passages 45, and an outer annular passage 42, around the valve 49, and through the ports 51 into the upper end of the cylinder. At the same time water passes from the lower end of the cylinder through ports 58, 59 in the valve 55 and lower end of the piston, conduits 46, past the valve 54, and through the pressure chamber 43 to the discharge pipe 14. In a modification, the suction and pressure chambers are disposed side by side instead of end to end. The cylinder 27 carries a ring 30 and is reciprocated by two links 32 pivotally attached to a double lever 34 which is adjustably fulcrummed at 35 on a wheeled tank 6 and is fitted with an operating handle 36. The discharge conduit 14 is coupled to a flexible hose 18 which is wound on a drum 22 rotatably mounted on the tank and provided with a key-hole slot to receive the nozzle.
