Abstract
551,956. Linear-dimension gauges. SHEFFIELD CORPORATION. Sept. 24, 1941, No. 12379. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1940. [Class 106 (ii) ] A device for gauging several dimensions of a workpiece simultaneously comprises a series of work contacting elements each 'arranged to operate a movable member from a normal position between two switch contacts to engage one or other and operate a signalling circuit to show which dimension departs from standard such circuits being connected to a common indicating device which shows whether or not all dimensions conform to standard. A support 10 has an upstanding portion 11 provided with guides 12 for holders 13 which may be adjusted in the guides and clamped by screws 14 extending through slots 15. Each holder supports a gauge head including gauging mechanism and a pair of work-contacting fingers. The gauge heads 18 to 25 are arranged in staggered relation to one another at opposite sides of a work receiving space 27, the workpiece shown in dotted, lines 31 being placed with its lower end in an arbour 30 on a support slide- 28 which engages an adjustable stop 32. The gauge head 18 has a feeler 33 moving horizontally. The work is contacted by a finger 34 on a block 35 having a laterally projecting lug 36 which engages the feeler 33. The block 35 is supported by two parallel spring blades 37 from a part 38 of a head-positioning arm 39 secured to the housing of the head 18. The arm 39 extends across the work position and has a work-contacting finger 40 opposite the finger 34. The arm. 39 is carried by parallel spring blades 42 from a bar 43 fixed to the holder 13.' A lug 44 on the arm 39 engages between two lugs. 45 on the bar 43 a spring 46. in one lug 45 engaging one face of the lug 44 the other face of which is engaged by a stud 48 in the other lug 45. The contact 40 is then yieldingly pressed towards the work. The gauging heads 19 to 25 are similarly arranged excepting that the arms 39 of heads 22 to 25 are reversely positioned. When the feeler 33 is positioned correctly according to a standard dimension, an arm moved thereby' takes up a position between two pairs of closed spring contacts. When the arm is moved a slight distance to right or left of this position owing to movement of the feeler 33, one or the other of these pairs of contacts is broken. The contacts are in electric circuit with coloured lamps, a green and a red lamp being arranged in a casing behind an opalescent viewing screen which appears amber when both red and green lamps are lit and green or red when one lamp is out. The lamps for the various heads are preferably arranged in the line and are connected up in circuit with a master red lamp 106 and the arrangement is such that if all parts conform to standard size an amber light shows for each head and the master lamp is out. If any portion. is either over or under size, the master lamp shows red and the head which is not of standard dimension will show green or red as the dimension is over or under size. Specification 543,806 is referred to.
