Abstract
551,587. Clutches. STEVENS, A. H. (Felt & Tarrant Manufacturing Co.). Sept. 18, 1941, No. 11986. [Class 80 (ii)] A clutch permitting a member 11 oscillating with a constant amplitude to drive a member 12 with variable amplitude comprises a series of balls 25 carried in recesses 26 in the driving member 11 and pressed by a volute spring 41 into engagement with recesses 21 in a member 19 fixed to the driven member 12. The spring pressure may be adjusted by nuts 43. The recesses 21 comprise deep and shallow spherical depressions 22, 23 respectively, connected by a cam surface 24. The driving member 11 is freely mounted on a hub 15 fixed to the member 12 and has an extension 27 which engages a stud 17 on the driven member 12 in the initial position of the parts. In such position the balls register with the shallow depressions 23. The driving stroke of the member 11 is in the direction tending to move the extension 27 away from the stud 17. The engagement of the balls 25 with the depressions 23 cause the driving and driven members to move together until a stop (not shown) is inserted into the path of the driven member 12 whereupon the balls are forced out of the depressions 23 and ride upon the surfaces 24 towards the depressions 22 until the stroke of the driving member 11 is completed. At the end of the return stroke of the member 11 the parts are then in the initial positions. The clutch mechanism may be employed between the actuating mechanism and the accumulator mechanism of a calculating machine.
