Abstract
551,140. Propeller blades. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and FORSYTH, A. G. Dec. 10, 1941, No. 15934. [Class 114] [Also in Group XXII] A propeller blade is made from a sheet metal blank a Fig. 1, having such profile that when the marginal positions are retroversed along the lines b, the marginal portions meet at the tip and root so that they may be welded together at c, Fig. 3, leaving a gap d, Figs. 3 and 5, extending over the greater part of the length and breadth of the blade. The root. which is of hollow circular section may be externally threaded or flanged to withstand the centrifugal force on the blade, and the hollow blade is then filled with a mouldable material such as a synthetic resin. The resin &c. may be reinforced by a backbone g, Fig. 10, of moulded plastic material anchored to the root of the blade and to reduce the weight of resin tubes of circular or semi-circular section may be embedded therein. The edges of the gap may be serrated or otherwise formed to key into the moulded material. The blank a preferably tapers in thickness from the root to the tip.
