Abstract
399,607. Air-screws. TURNBULL, W. R., Rothesay, New Brunswick, Canada. June 10, 1932, No. 16467. [Class 114.] An air-screw comprises a framework or grid-like structure, consisting of a series of continuous longitudinal wires connected or braced together by transverse ties in the form of wires or like thin members, the framework being embedded in or covered with a cementitious filling material. A material of a plastic character such as wood-pulp or papiermÔchÚ and cement or material such as the cellular rubberized cement known by the Registered Trade Mark "Onazote may be used. Preferably the grid-like structure is formed of plated piano wires or wires of manganese bronze. The longitudinal wires 9 run from the tip of each blade to the root and serve to carry the centrifugal load, and they are held together or spaced by the cross wires 10 which serve to take the other loads on the blade. The wires may be built up on a jig to give an approximate shape to the final form of blade. In a twoblade propeller the longitudinal wires are connected from tip to tip of the two blades. The blades may be provided with metal tips 12 and edge members 13. With individual blades, the longitudinal wires are connected at the root with a sleeve 15 within the hub sleeve 14 and a ribbed conical stiffening member 18 is secured thereto.
