Abstract

320,365. Vickers, Ltd., and Pierson, R. K. May 7, 1928. Screw propellers.- Hollow airscrews formed with a central spar or rod carrying transverse diaphragms to which the thin sheet covering is secured are constructed with flanges on the diaphragms for securing them to the central spar and the blade sheets. The diaphragms may be conical. The central spar A, Fig. 1, tapers from root to tip and the diaphragms B have internal flanges B' pinned to the spar and external flanges B<3> to which the sheets F are secured, the outer sheet D being continued over to form the top and the leading edge C, Fig. 2, also being continued over to line up with the front and back plate sections. One face of the blade may be constituted by a single plate. Instead of the diaphragm flanges being parallel to the length of the blade they may be transversely disposed.
