Abstract

550,886. Artificial arms. BLATCHFORD, W. A. Oct. 17, 1941, No. 13371. [Class 81 (ii)] A device for connecting artificial arm fitments comprises ball engaging members co-operating with apertures &c. in another fitment so that this fitment will be yieldably engaged or positively locked in various postions of rotary adjustment. Fig. 1 is a part sectional elevation of one form of yielding and locking device, A tubular member 1 screwed at 2 for attachment to an artificial arm is provided near its lower end with two or more housings 3 each of which contains a spring ball 4. The springs 5 tend to urge the balls into engagement with recesses 8 formed in the stem 9 of a hook. An extension 12 of the stem 9 is reduced in diameter and coried at its end 13 to project into a reduced part 14 of the member 1 which is slotted to receive a spring urged lever 16 and permit it to engage a circumferential groove in the extension 12. A sleeve 18 fitted with a milled covering sleeve 19 surrounds the member 1 and is formed with a pair of slots to permit the springs 5 to be splayed out when the device is unlocked. Portions of the sleeve between the slots provide abutments which press the balls 4 inwardly, when the sleeve is rotated in one direction, and lock the balls into recesses 8. The sleeve 18 is also formed with other slots 22, Fig. 4, to receive the ends of the lever 16. The portion 27 of the sleeve 18 between the slots 22 holds the lever 16 inwardly when in locked position and engages its end 28 when in unlocked position. Alternatively, the sleeve may be formed with internal cams or inclines to engage the springs 5 and with a stop to co-operate with the lever 16. A modification is described.
