UNIVERSAL FOCUSING DEVICE.
Application filed November 25, 1925. Serial No. 71,2?8.
This invention relates to focusing devices,l
for incandescent lamps especially intended for use with light projectors.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which will permit of ready adjustment of the lamp so as to focus the same properly with respect to the reflector. lThe device permits of both axial and angular adjustment of the lamp, and includes a single element for locking the lamp socket in adjusted position.
One form which my invention may assume is exemplified in the following descript-ion and illustrated in the accompanying draw-- device is provided with a base 12 for secur-y ing' it to the casing. Securedvto this base is a seat 13 screw-threaded on its exterior. Fitted against the seat 13 is a spherical element 14 having an opening to slidably receive a tubular member 15 which forms the socket for the lamp 16. The spherical member 14 is constructed of spring metal and is provided with slits 16@L extending inwardly from opposite ends past the middle thereof, so as to Vcontract and grip the lamp socket when clamped against its seat. The spherical member is clamped to its seat by means of a ring 17 which is threaded onto the seat 13, and has a iange 18 at its opposite end contacting with the sides of the spherical member. /Vhen the clamping ring 17 is slacked ofi', the spherical member 14 expands and allows the socket 15 to be moved axially for the purposev of adjusting the position of the lamp. Angular adjustment of the lamp is provided by reason of the spherical member moving angularly upon its seat. When the lamp is in the correct position the ring 17 is tightened, thereby locking the spherical member upon its seat and simultaneously contracting it so as to grip the ysocket tightly.
Any desired adjustment is quickly and easily obtained, and the device is simple and inexpensive to construct. The clamping ring 1"? serves to lock the spherical member to its seat and to cause the latter yto grip the socket, so that the lamp is securely locked against any movement whatever by a simple turning of a single element. i
Various changes in the construction and arrangement of the several parts may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention as disclosed inthe appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what site the seat,y for clamping the spherical mem-` ber tightly against the seat, whereby both ends of the spherical member are contracted to grip'the lamp socket.
2. A focusing device, comprising a spherical element having an opening to receive a lamp socket and being provided with slits extending inwardly from each yend past the middle thereof and terminating short of the opposite end, and constructed of spring metal, and means engageable with each end of the spherical member for contracting the same whereby both ends of the spherical member are made to grip the lamp socket.
