LAMP-SOCKET SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.

Be it known that 1, GUY W. COMER, a
` citizen of the `United States, and a resident With these objects 1n view ray-invention consists in the combinations andfarra'ngements of claimed.
The invention will be best understood' by reference yto the accompanying wdrawing forming a part'of this specification, and in which-` Figure 1 isa side elevationof a lamp socket support embodying my invention', Fig. 2 is top plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on line m-w ofFig. 1, and Fig.. 4 is a section taken on line g/-Jy of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a pair of clamping jaws 1 and 2 formed of metal.
The forward ends of the jaws 1 and 2 are curved for engagement with Aa supporting element A and the inner or engaging surface dit of each of said jaw ends is provided with a lining 3 of non-abrasive material, preferably felt. The lining 3 is secured in position at its outer end by means of a back turned Hange 4 provided at the outer end of each of said jaws, the inner end of the lining being secured in position by inwardly extending pointed fingers 5 pressed from said jaws and which pierce the lining at. the rearward end thereof, as clearly shown in Fi .3.
,'lghe rearward end 6 of the jaw l is disposed at right angles to the body 'of said jaw and loosely engages a slot 7 provided for the reception thereof in the rearward'v end of jaw 2, the portion 6 being reduced in width for this purpose. Arranged u on the jaw end 6 isa 'loop 8 of wire whic is adapted to serve as a stop in order to limit sliding movement of the jaw end 6 in slot 7 in one direction. Opposite edges of the jaw end 6 are provided with notches or slots turning the loop parts hereinafter described and- 9 adapted for engagement by opposite sides of the loop 8 when turned to the position shown in Fig. 3 in order to lock said loop agalnst relative movement upon said jaw en d. When said loop is in engagement with said notches it will be seen that the same w1ll serve as ajstop engaging against the adjacent side of the jaw 2 to limit the movement of the rearward end of jaw 1 toward the corresponding end of said jaw 2. By 8 so that the major axis thereof' is -disposed in the `same plane as a cross section of the jaw end 6, as clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, said loop disengages the notches 9, permitting of adjustment of said loop longitudinally of said jaw end. With this arrangement it will be seen that the loop 8 may be adjusted along the jaw end 6 to any desired position in order to limit inward movement of the rearward end of jaw l as desired.
The outer or engaging ends of the jaws -1 and 2 are moved toward each other or into clamping relation by means of a bolt 10 and coperating nut 1.1, it being clear that movement of said jaw ends toward each other is eii'ected by threading of nut 11 upon said bolt. Said bolt is provided with a squared portion l12 which engages a perforation of corresponding form in the jaw member in order to lock said bolt against relative rotation in' the adjustment ofi nut 11 thereon. By reason of the adjustable connection be'- tween the jaws 1 and 2 which is afforded by the adjustable stop loop 8 and bolt 10 and nut 11 it will be seen that said jaws are rendered Icapable of engaging with supporting elements of various sizes or thicknesses.
The rearward end of jaw 2 is provided with an angular extension 13 the outer end of which is connected by bolt 14 and cooperating thumb nut l5 with an angular arm 16. Said arm is provided with an elongated slot 17 registering with bolt 14 in order to permit of longitudinal adjustment of said arm relative to the portion 13 as will be readily understood. The opposite end of arm` 16 is pivotally connected by means of bolt 18 and coperating thumb nut 19 with the rearward end of an angular arm 20 which carries at its outer end a lamp socket clamp 21. Said lamp socket clamp is simply a resilient split ring which is of a size adapting the'same to snugly embrace a lamp socket B. Said ring is provided with an internal annular groove 22 which is adapted to engage with the annular bead usually provided upon a lamp socket yin order to lock the latter against relative longitudinal movement in said clamp, when the latter is in use.
With the arrangement set forth it will be seen that a lamp socket support is provided wherein a multitude of adjustments is permitted so as to allow a lamp socket to be supported in any position desired. In the adjustment of the support as mentioned the thumb nuts 15 and 19 are loosened, being tightened again in order-to lock the parts coperating therewith in positions of adjustment; after the lamp has been adjusted to the position desired.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of lthe appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters i Patent is:
l. A device ofA the class described comprising a clamping element consisting of a pair of jaws movable toward V and fromeach other; a stop member mounted on one end of one of said jaws for adjustment longitudinally thereof adapted to engage against the corresponding end of the other of said jaws to limit the movement of said jaw ends toward each other; and means engagingwith said jaws intermediate their extremities for moving the opposite ends of said jaws toward each other, substantially as described.`
2. A device of the class described comprising a clamping element consisting of a pair of jaws movable toward and from each other; a loop on one end of one of said jaws adapted to engage against the corresponding end of the other of said jaws to limit the movement of said jaw ends toward each other, said irst mentioned jaw endhaving slots spaced along opposite edges thereof for releasable engagement by said loop to lock the latter thereto; and means for mov- .ing the opposite ends of said jaws toward each other, substantially as described.
3..A device of the class described comprisin a clamping element consisting of a pair o aws movable toward and from each other, the rearward end portion of one of said jaws being disposed at right angles to the body of the jaw, said jaw end loosely engaging a slot provided in the rearward endof the other of said jaws; a loop loosely mounted on said angularly disposed jaw end adapted to engage against the slotted .end of the other of said jaws to limit the movement of said angularly disposed jaw end in one direction in said slot; said loop, when turned to one position on the jaw end embraced thereby, being locked thereto against relative movement and, when turned to another position on said jaw end, being loose for longitudinal adjustment thereon; and means for moving the opposite ends of said jaws toward each other; substantially as described.
4. A device of the class described comprising a clamping element consisting of a pair of jaws movable toward and from each other, the rearward end portion of one of said jaws being disposed at right angles to the body of the jaw; said jaw end loosely engaging a slot provided in the rearward end of the other of said jaws; a loop loosely -mounted on said angular-ly disposed jaw end adapted to engage against the slotted end of the other of said jaws to4 limit the movement of'said angularly disposed jaw end in one direction in said slot, said loop, when turned to one position on the jaw end embraced thereby, being locked thereto against relative movement and; when turned to another position on said w end, being loose for longitudinal adjustment thereon; opposite edges of said jaw end being notched for engagement by said loop when in operative position; and means for moving the opposite ends of said jaws toward each other, substantially as described.
5. A device of the class described comprising a clamping element; a plurality of pivotally connected arms connected with said clamping element; and a socket clamp supported by said arms, said socket clamp consisting of a resilient split ring having an annular internal groove for engaging with the bead on the lamp socket, substantially as described.
