Abstract

550,579. Universal joints. HARDY, SPICER & CO., Ltd., and WALDRON, T. A. Oct. 22, 1941, No. 13562. [Class 80 (ii)] In constant velocity joints of the kind in which each shaft-end carries a pair of trunnion blocks the respective axes of which are at all times coplanar, each pair of blocks working between parallel faces of slots provided in an intermediate member, such intermediate member is, according to the invention, enveloped in a steel sleeve which serves to support its jaws against bending. The intermediate member 11, of short dumb-bell form, has, at opposite ends, co-planar slots 12 with parallel surfaces. At the ends of the central partition 13 are secured by pins 14 two pads 15 internal surfaces of which engage the spherical ends of the intermediate member, being wide enough to bridge the slots. The parts are all held in position by coacting parts 16 of a sleeve the remote ends of which are internally formed as sockets to engage the spheres. The trunnion blocks 18 are carried, through needle bearings 19, at the ends of transverse pins 20 on the shaft ends 21, the extremities 22 of the blocks being shaped to contact the arcuate surfaces of the pads and sleeve. The blocks make substantially full contact with the faces of the slots in all positions.
