Abstract

550,163. Covering cores by winding. LONDON ELECTRIC WIRE CO., & SMITHS, Ltd., and SANDS, A. J. Nov. 3, 1941, No. 14173. [Class 109] A covering head for wrapping a strip of fragile material helically on a core 52 is provided with adjustable friction gear which drives a package 34 of the material by an endless belt. The friction gear comprises a pair of spaced members 7, 14 arranged in overlapping relation and a wheel or roller 13 adjustable along a line joining the centres of the members :7, 14 so as to vary the speed of the driven member 14. The driving member 7 may comprise a planetary gear wheel, one face of which is machined flat to engage the roller 13. The friction gear may be enclosed in a cover 27. The belt 35 may be tensioned by passing it around sleeves 36 mounted upon a yoke 40 which is controlled by a torsion spring 42 which tends to rotate the yoke in the direction of the arrow A so as to lengthen the path of the belt.
